Charu Kumarhia

Journalist, Storyteller & Writer

Charu Kumarhia is an Emmy award winning journalist/writer/speaker based in the southeastern United States. She hosts the weekly podcast The Story with Charu, which explores race and culture in America and shares interviews from fascinating news makers and game changers across the globe.

Passionate about people and their unique stories she is easy to talk and fun to be around, a great plus for anyone learning how to connect with people.

Kumarhia was born the eldest daughter of Indian immigrants to the United States in the deep south. Racism and any discomfort around ethnicity was not discussed. She was an outcast from her peers due to her foreign name and appearance, excluded from her family of origin due to her Americanness. That feeling of always being the “other” turned her into an observor, able to relate to people on a deep empathic level, it became her secret weapon. She can talk about race relations and culture from the perspective of someone who never really fits in but can see all the pieces of how we heal from our places of fracture while working towards an equitable society.
