Cheap Trick
Rock Band Known for "Surrender" & "I Want You to Want Me"; Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Cheap Trick, consisting of Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, and Tom Petersson, has solidified their place in the music industry with an illustrious career spanning decades. Their studio album, "Dream Police," reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart, while their live album "At Budokan" brought them mainstream popularity in the United States in 1979, ultimately selling triple-platinum. The band's longevity is evident in their continued performances and album releases, such as "Rockford" in 2006 and "In Another World" in 2021. They also maintain an active touring schedule, performing live more than 5,000 times since their formation.
The band's influence is far-reaching, with many rock artists, both from the mainstream and underground, citing their impact. Their song "The Flame" became their first-ever No. 1 hit, and they experienced a resurgence of popularity with the platinum album "Lap of Luxury," widely recognized as their comeback album. Notably, Cheap Trick performed the entire "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album live with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in 2007. Their music's cultural significance is further highlighted by the selection of their song "In the Street" as the theme song for the TV show "That '70s Show."
Cheap Trick's contributions to the music industry have been formally recognized, leading to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. They continue to release new music, with their album "Bang, Zoom, Crazy... Hello" marking their first album on a major label in 22 years. The state of Illinois celebrates Cheap Trick Day on April 1 each year, a testament to their local influence. In addition to their musical undertakings, the band has also been involved in advocacy, lobbying Congress to regulate temporary stages.
