Chelsea Newton, an associate head coach at Texas A&M, brings a robust portfolio of basketball experience and coaching prowess to her role. With a tenure spanning 14 years, she honed her skills at Rutgers University and the University of Georgia prior to Texas A&M. Newton's coaching style has fostered the growth of many aspiring athletes, including 14 players who went on to pursue careers in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and 19 all-conference selections.
Newton's contributions extend beyond coaching. As a recruiting coordinator at Georgia, she played a critical role in attracting top talent, signing three highly rated classes in the final four years of her tenure. Her recruiting efforts have also been fruitful at Texas A&M, where she helped secure the No. 20 recruiting class in the country and the top player in the state of Texas. Moreover, she has a proven track record of spotting and nurturing talent, having signed 13 top-100 prospects and six top-20 recruits over her career.
Prior to coaching, Newton was a formidable basketball player herself. At Rutgers, she was a four-year starter and the team's Most Valuable Player in 2004 and 2005. Her defensive skills also earned her the title of Big East Defensive Player of the Year. Following her collegiate career, she was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 2005 WNBA Draft, where she played a crucial role in leading the team to victory in the championship that year. Newton also gained international exposure by playing professionally in Israel, Poland, and Italy.
