Chokwe Antar Lumumba

Attorney, Activist & Politician

Chokwe Antar Lumumba is an American attorney, activist, politician and the current Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi.

While running for mayor, Lumumba soundly won the Democratic nomination, defeating incumbent mayor Tony Yarber and John Horhn, a state senator. Lumumba was endorsed by Our Revolution and the Working Families Party and ran on a progressive platform promising to make Jackson "the most radical city on the planet."

Lumumba, the son of the late Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, ran on the People's Platform, which he co-authored with his father, which includes progressive policies aimed at growing local businesses, creating a civilian law-enforcement-review board and reforming the education system.

He believes the "collective genius" of local residents can move the community toward economic democracy. The human rights attorney is the co-founder of the Mississippi Human Rights Collective, which demanded the removal of the Confederate symbol from the state's flag. He is also active with the Coalition for Economic Justice and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement.

Lumumba received his bachelor's degree in political science and government from Tuskegee University and his law degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University.
