Physician, Expert Speaker on the Opioid Crisis, Founder of End the Opioid Crisis, Public Health Advocate & Author

Chris Johnson is a Board Certified Emergency physician with over 15 years of experience treating patients in the Emergency Department. After completing his residency at Hennepin County Medical Center, he moved into private practice at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. As an emergency medicine doctor, he witnessed the prescription opioid and heroin epidemic evolve from the front lines.

Over the last two decades he has become a passionate advocate for public health, with particular interest in the opioid crisis. He served as Chair of the Minnesota Department of Human Services Opioid Prescribing Work Group from 2015 to 2021 and is a Board member of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing. He is a recognized expert on the opioid crisis and has given presentations around the country and been sought for his advice by local and national political leaders on how to solve this ongoing critical health care problem.

The Opioid Epidemic: How the Medical Industry Created a Public Health Crisis

In this talk Johnson discusses the evolution of the opioid epidemic in America and explains how and why it happened. He discusses what about the American system made us particularly vulnerable to a crisis like this, which has not happened in other countries like Germany and Japan. Finally, he also discusses the phases of the epidemic - from prescription to heroin to fentanyl - and how they are essentially just different faces of the same problem.
