Christine Wormuth is the 25th Secretary of the Army, following her nomination by President Biden and confirmation by the United States Senate in 2021. As the first female secretary, she holds the service branch's top civilian post within the Department of Defense responsible for all matters relating to the U.S. Army. She oversees the service's $185 billion budget and is responsible for decisions impacting nearly one million Active, Guard, and Reserve soldiers and more than 330,000 Army civilians.
Secretary Wormuth has worked on defense and national security policy for more than twenty-five years as a career civilian and as a presidential appointee. Prior to her confirmation, Secretary Wormuth was the Director of the International Defense and Security Center at the RAND Corporation, providing research and analytical support to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff and other organizations. During this period, she was a frequent writer and speaker on foreign policy, national security, and homeland security issues.
Prior to RAND, she served in several roles during the Obama Administration: as a special assistant to the president and senior director for Defense at the National Security Council; as deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Plans, and Forces; and as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, where she advised the Secretary of Defense on the full range of regional and functional national security issues.
Earlier, Secretary Wormuth served as a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and worked in the private sector on defense issues. She first entered the federal service as a Presidential Management Fellow in the Policy Office of the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Secretary Wormuth is a two-time recipient of the Department of Defense medal for distinguished public service. Additionally, Forbes magazine recognized her on their "50 Over 50" list in 2023.
Secretary Wormuth holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Fine Arts from Williams College and a Masters of Public Policy from the University of Maryland.
