Chrystia Freeland is Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as an author, journalist and politician.
After getting her start as a Ukraine-based stringer for the Financial Times, The Washington Post, and The Economist, Freeland took on a number of roles at the Financial Times, including UK News Editor, Moscow Bureau Chief, Eastern Europe Correspondent, Editor of FT Weekend Magazine, and Editor of FT.com. She served as Deputy Editor of The Globe and Mail between 1999 and 2001 before becoming Deputy Editor and then US Managing Editor of the Financial Times.
In 2010, Freeland joined Canadian-owned Thomson Reuters.She was a Managing Director of the company and Editor of Consumer News when she decided to return home and enter politics.
In addition to her extensive journalism career, Freeland is the author of two of non-fiction books called Sale of the Century, a 2000 book about Russia's journey from communism to capitalism, and Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else. Plutocrats was a New York Times bestseller and winner of the 2013 Lionel Gelber Prize and the 2013 National Business Book Award.
Freeland's political career began in 2013 when she left journalism to run as a candidate for the nomination of the Liberal Party. In 2013, Freeland was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre in a by-election and then re-elected in 2015 as the Member of Parliament for University–Rosedale.. In 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chose Freeland as Minister of International Trade. Then, in 2017, she was appointed to the position of Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada.
In April 18, 2019, she was ranked 37th among the world's leading leaders in Forbes Magazine's annual list. Because of its "strong negotiating skills" that resulted in a Canada-European Union trade agreement and the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.
