All Hail Claire Foy: The Woman Who Plays Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown
As the longest reigning monarch ever, Queen Elizabeth II has ruled over the United Kingdom for nearly 65 years, worked with 13 prime ministers (including Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher), and led the country through many major historical moments in history. While the Queen’s enduring public role has made her one of the most famous women in the world, she has also remained a fiercely private individual. As a staunch follower of royal protocol, Queen Elizabeth has always avoided revealing much, if anything, about herself. In turn, we know little about the white-coiffed woman sitting on the throne.
Claire Foy: an actor bringing a subtle talent to majestic roles
Some castings seem so obvious in retrospect. Pictures released this week show Claire Foy playing Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day in 1947, and just as you cannot picture the older Elizabeth as anyone other than Helen Mirren, when The Crown, an ambitious 60-part Netflix drama, comes out next year, the younger version will probably be forever linked with Foy.
Claire Foy Is Getting Ready to Say Good-Bye to The Crown
Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Luckily, Claire Foy won’t have to wear it much longer. Though the actress is currently playing Queen Elizabeth in the glamorous, aptly titled Netflix series The Crown, she’ll be stepping down after its second season. The third season will jump several years, meaning that she and co-star Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip, must be replaced by older actors. And Foy, it turns out, is quite ready to say ta-ta to all that.
