Clare de Boer and Annie Shi (and their third partner, Jessica Shadbolt) met while working in London; de Boer was cooking at the River Cafe, while Shi was working in finance. They bonded over a desire to open a restaurant focused on the luxurious simplicity of high-end dining, and after a six-month supper-club trial out of de Boer's parents' apartment in London, the team opened King in New York. In the two years since, it's been named an NYT Top Restaurant and has garnered de Boer a nomination for the James Beard Rising Star award.
