Cliff Kapono is a professional surfer who rides the best waves around the world and tries to figure out better ways to protect them. His life involves equal parts science as it does surf.

A Native Hawaiian, Kapono has a deep connection to the ocean that has been a central theme throughout his life and career -- one that is evident in his surfing style and philosophy. He has competed in various surfing events and is recognized for his ability to merge traditional Hawaiian surfing techniques with modern styles. He has produced a handful of award-winning short films on topics including Indigenous activism, ocean conservation, global food security and augmented reality.

Outside of the water, Kapono holds a PhD in chemistry from the University of California, San Diego and is a professor at Arizona State University, where he has contributed to several peer-reviewed publications on molecular bioscience. His research focuses on the intersection of environmental science and human health.
