Curtis Buzzard
Military Fellow, International Security Program
Lieutenant Colonel Curtis Buzzard is the U.S. Army fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is an infantry officer with service in Iraq and Afghanistan. His most recent assignment was with 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), which is in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. He commanded the battalion of over 800 paratroopers. While serving as the nation’s Global Response Force (GRF), the battalion was alerted and deployed on short notice in support of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan for 9 months in 2011–2012. Prior to that assignment, he was the Army military aide to the president from 2007 to 2009, where he served at the White House for both Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. In 2005, he was the battalion's operations officer and later executive officer with 1st Battalion, 505th PIR, to include a combat deployment to Iraq during the “surge.” From 2002 to 2004, he served as a strategist in the Army's Strategy, Plans, and Policy Directorate, where he focused on joint operational concepts and experimentation. His first assignment was as a rifle platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he also served in a variety of staff officer positions. He also commanded infantry companies at Fort Irwin, CA, and Fort Myer, VA.
Lieutenant Colonel Buzzard was commissioned as an officer in the Army through the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, in 1992 with a B.S. in economics. In 2001, he was selected for the Army's G3 Strategist Program and earned a M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In 2004, he attended the U.S. Marine Corps' Command and Staff College and simultaneously earned a master’s degree in military affairs. He has received numerous personal, unit, and campaign awards.
