Dan + Shay

Grammy Award-Winning Country Music Duo Known for "Speechless" & "Tequila"

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney — known collectively as Dan + Shay — have established themselves as one of country music’s most dominant duos. They are best known for their Grammy award-winning hit song "Tequila," which went to #1 on the US country chart and reached 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. With pristine vocals and a knack for writing clever yet relatable songs about looking for, finding and losing love, Dan + Shay bring a youthful sense of energy to country music.

Dan was raised in Wexford, Pennsylvania. He attended Carnegie Mellon University to study finance and play football. Shay was raised in Natural Dam, Arkansas. Following high school, he attended Valley Forge Christian College for one year before completely pursuing his music career. Shay was in a relationship with country singer Veronica Ballestrini from January 2012 to March 2013. During their relationship, they would post cover and original songs on YouTube and reached over 150,000 views combined.

Before the duo's foundation, Shay was a solo artist on T-Pain's Nappy Boy Entertainment label and Dan was a member of a group called Bonaventure as well as a previous member of the band Transition on Floodgate Records.

The two met in Nashville, Tennessee, in December of 2012, and started writing the day after they met. The first song they wrote together was given to Rascal Flatts, and within two months, the duo had multiple publishing offers and signed with Warner/Chappell Music.

In October of 2013, their debut single, "19 You + Me," was released to country radio. It received positive reviews. Their debut album, Where It All Began, was released the following April. The album's second single, "Show You Off," was released to country radio on May 12, 2014. They made their Grand Ole Opry debut that same year. They also received a 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards Vocal Duo of the Year nomination. The album's third single, "Nothin' Like You," was released to country radio on February 23, 2015. It reached #1 on the Country charts in December 2015.

Their sophomore album's first single, "From the Ground Up," was released to country radio in February 2016. The album's second single, "How Not To," was released to country radio in September 2016. It reached #1 on the Country Airplay chart in July 2017.

In January 2018, the duo released "Tequila," the lead single from their self-titled third studio album, which was released in June 2018. "Tequila" has since become their highest-charting effort on the US Billboard Hot 100, with it reaching the top 40. They received the Grammy for Best Country Duo Group Performance for the track. At the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards won the awards for Vocal Duo of the Year, Single of the Year, and Song of the Year for "Tequila."

They followed up the titanic success of "Tequila" with their 2018 single "Speechless," which also hit the U.S. Top 40 and #1 on the country charts.
