Dana Carvey is a celebrated comedian and actor, best known for his work on "Saturday Night Live" where he became a mainstay for seven seasons from 1986 to 1992. During this time, he created some of the show's most memorable characters, including "Church Lady," "Garth" from Wayne & Garth, "Grumpy Old Man," and the bodybuilding "Hans" of Hans & Franz. His performances earned him an Emmy Award in 1993 for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program, and he was nominated six times for an Emmy during his tenure on the show.
Born on June 2, 1955, in Missoula, Montana, Carvey grew up in a family of creative inclinations, the son of Billie Dahl (McDonald) and Bud Carvey. He pursued a degree in Communication Arts at San Francisco State University, initially performing standard impressions before developing his original characters. Following his college graduation, Carvey moved to Los Angeles in 1981, quickly securing a development deal with NBC, which led to his role in the sitcom "One of the Boys" alongside Mickey Rooney and Nathan Lane.
Carvey's film career includes starring roles in "Wayne's World" (1992) and "Wayne's World 2" (1993), both of which were significant box office successes. Additionally, he appeared in other films such as "The Road to Wellville" and "Clean Slate." Despite a less impactful presence in later films like "The Master of Disguise," Carvey remained active in the industry, taking on roles in animated movies like "Secret Life of Pets" and "Secret Life of Pets 2," where he voiced the character ‘Pops’ the dog.
Beyond films, Carvey has left a mark on television and live performances. He starred in the 2016 Netflix special "Straight White Male, 60," which garnered considerable acclaim, and mentored amateur impressionists in the USA Network’s series "First Impressions." His ability to seamlessly blend wit, style, and unrestrained humor shines through in his live comedy performances and numerous TV cable specials.
Today, Dana Carvey continues to be a prominent figure in comedy, residing with his family in Southern California, where he still engages audiences with his unique blend of humor and character-based comedy.
