Speech Topics
The Place and Power of Civility Today
During these past couple of years, living through a global pandemic, rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and substance misuse have skyrocketed. The isolation that many have experienced due to social distancing, remote work, and quarantine requirements only compound the sense of disconnection. Stress and anonymity are two of the main drivers of incivility, and kindness is a simple strategy to rebuild civility and connection. This workshop will review the ways in which choosing civility and kindness can enhance relational competence and purposeful poise and improve health and mental health. We will consider how civility can become a powerful way to renew respect for oneself and others with lasting public health implications.
Civility in the 21st Century Workplace
The American workplace is one of the most diverse in the world. Prior to the COVID crisis, the annual cost of incivility in the American workplace alone was estimated at $300 billion. Stress and anonymity are two of the main drivers of incivility, and kindness is a simple strategy to rebuild civility and connection. This workshop will review the ways in which choosing civility and kindness can enhance relational competence and purposeful poise and improve personal and professional satisfaction and improve workplace morale. We will consider how civility can become a powerful way to renew respect for oneself and others in ways that are good for oneself and good for business.
