Daniel Hoffman

Leadership and Team-Building Speaker, Safety and Risk Consultant, Fly Fishing Enthusiast

Daniel Hoffman has a singular mission: To embrace the crucial topics of leadership, team-building, safety, and risk-management, and address them within a unique framework that will engage and entertain audiences across a wide range of disciplines.

As a longtime Alaskan and avid fly fisherman, Hoffman is the author of “An Alaska Flyfisher’s Odyssey: Seeking a Life of Drag-Free Drift in the Land of the Midnight Sun.” Reflecting his book’s primary themes, Hoffman frames his keynote presentations within this same perspective, utilizing the powerful lessons learned from a lifetime of fly fishing to illustrate strategies for growth and success in business, relationships, and life.

Hoffman custom-tailors his delivery for a wide variety of audiences, having addressed Alaska’s largest telecommunications providers, construction companies, public safety departments, and service organizations. While his early work as a fly-fishing guide in the remote lodges of Bristol Bay was certainly instrumental in shaping his outlook, his twenty-year career as a peace officer and municipal police chief, followed by eleven years in industrial safety and risk-management, have provided the real-world depth of experience necessary to connect with the most discerning audiences. Hoffman continues to live with his wife in Fairbanks, Alaska, and if he’s not speaking at a conference, he’s likely out fishing…

Speech Topics

Leadership and Supervisory Development

Designed for conferences addressing enhanced leadership and effective supervisory development, Daniel examines the qualities and practices that lend themselves to exceptional leadership in today's businesses and professional organizations. After examining several of the pitfalls encountered with trainings based upon "personality assessment models," Daniel then takes the audience on a fascinating journey through the fly fisherman's world, illustrating how people and situations can be approached in a manner designed to enhance leadership abilities and achieve optimal outcomes.

Effective Team-Building

In today’s business environment, the ability to structure truly effective teams – those whose aggregate value vastly exceeds the sum of their member’s individual traits and contributions – is invaluable! Utilizing one of his favorite metaphors, Daniel spotlights the formulation and use of the “dry-dropper rig” in fly fishing as a perfect, illustrative example of factors and qualities that should be considered when assembling and supervising any prospective team. Whether one has had any prior experience with (or interest in) fishing, the lessons related in this presentation are readily apparent, enjoyably translating to a wide variety of circumstances and interests.

Safety and Risk Management

Designed for safety officers, risk managers, supervisors, and business leaders, Daniel examines the thought-processes, qualities, and practices necessary to ensure that a robust safety and risk-management culture takes root within one's organization. Drawing upon his extensive experience as a peace officer and industrial risk manager, as well as using analogies and illustrations from his lifetime’s experience as an Alaskan fly fisherman, Daniel's presentations are a welcome departure from the standard, bone-dry, “safety lecture” material often presented at such training events, and are guaranteed to hold the interest of anglers and non-anglers alike.

Increasing Sales, and the Art of "Reading the Water"

Designed for front-line sales staff, mid-level managers, and corporate executives, Daniel’s presentations focus on the critical factors necessary to achieve greater success in sales, negotiations, and corporate messaging. Artfully drawing upon a lifetime of lessons-learned in preparation for expected conditions - as well as nimbly responding when encountering unexpected changes - Daniel emphasizes those elements necessary to take one's overall sales and organizational success to the next level.

Relationships and Personal Growth- Seeking a Life of “Drag-Free Drift”

Drawing heavily from the lessons in his book, Daniel artfully utilizes the fly-fisherman's pursuit of a drag-free drift as an apt metaphor for achieving a more harmonious existence in life. Rather than merely “going with the flow,” Daniel discusses the importance of “mending one’s line” (i.e., making continuous, conscious modifications to one's behaviors and actions) as a crucial component in establishing one’s optimal path towards success. Whether one has any personal experience in fly fishing quickly becomes irrelevant, as the lessons related in this presentation are instantly relatable, and will appeal to a broad-based audience.
