MOST REQUESTED TOPICS:

Legal and Illegal Immigration

Americans have always been ambivalent about immigration. We’re an immigrant nation, yet we worry about the impact of today’s immigrants on our economy and culture. Today, as in the past, immigrants contribute to the strength and dynamism of our economy and society. Even illegal immigrants are drawn by the opportunities of a labor market that is creating more jobs than there are Americans ready to fill them. America’s immigration laws need to be reformed to match the needs and values of our nation. Griswold explains what drives today’s inflow of immigrants and offers a solution to illegal immigration consistent with our values as a nation.

Free trade and the U.S. Economy

Many Americans worry about the impact of trade on jobs, wages, and manufacturing. Like technology, trade can dislocate workers and disrupt industries. But trade also delivers lower prices and more variety for millions of American families, makes U.S. companies more competitive, and opens markets abroad for U.S. exports. Trade has not caused U.S. manufacturing to shrink but rather to move up the value chain to produce more sophisticated products. Americans enjoy more freedom, prosperity, and influence in the world as we engage fully in the global economy. Griswold answers the critics of trade with the kind of facts and reasoned analysis that are often missing in public debate.

The High Cost of U.S. Farm Programs

U.S. farm programs remain essentially unchanged from the 1930s, despite the transformation of the U.S. and global economies. U.S. farm subsidies and trade barriers tax American consumers with higher food prices, hurt U.S. exporters and food-processing industries, waste billions in tax dollars, damage the environment, stifle progress in rural communities, and tarnish our image abroad. Regardless of what other nations chose to do, Congress needs to reform U.S. agriculture programs to conform to market realities. Daniel Griswold makes the case that reforming U.S. agricultural programs is profoundly in our national interest.

China and America in the 21st Century

The emergence of China as a major trading nation is one of the great stories of our time. China’s spectacular growth has raised anxieties about our economy and security, but it also presents a historic opportunity to integrate more than one billion Chinese into the global economy. For Americans, trade with China delivers real benefits to consumers and huge opportunities for U.S. companies. Rapidly falling poverty and a growing middle class in China are changing its society and politics in unpredictable ways. Daniel Griswold provides a more hopeful view of America’s economic relationship with the world’s most populous country.

The Upside of Globalization

Globalization is transforming our world, mostly for the better. Although it poses challenges, the expansion of global commerce is helping nations to reduce poverty; raise environmental and labor standards; and promote democracy, human rights, and even peace. As the world’s leading economy, the United States has a huge stake in promoting a more open and prosperous world, especially in the insular Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Griswold describes the major trends shaping the global economy and how Americans are uniquely positioned to benefit from them.
