Danielle Evans

Author of "Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self" & Assistant Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison

Danielle Evans was born on November 8, 1983 in Northern Virginia. As a young girl, she moved to various states with her mother which have become the settings to many of her stories.

During childhood, Evans was often in settings where she was the only African-American. This sense of not belonging is a common theme in her work and her feelings on race are reflected often in her stories.

Evans' first short story collection, Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, won the 2011 PEN/Robert Bingham Prize.

Evans received a BA in Anthropology from Colombia University, an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers Workshop, and was a fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing.

Evans has taught at Missouri State University, American University, and now currently teaches in the Creative Writing MFA program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
