Packaging Designer at Ecovative Design, Using Plant Structures to Create Packaging

Danielle Marino is the lead packaging designer at Ecovative Design, a biotechnology company in Green Island, New York, that utilizes the naturally occurring attributes of mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms. Her role at Ecovative reflects her values of sustainability as she designs, grows, and tests home-compostable mushroom packaging.

Marino is an alum of the Rochester Institute of Technology industrial design program and solves environmental health issues through creative, intuitive design. Besides mushroom packaging, Ecovative also has developed other mycelium applications in apparel such as high-performance foams and mushroom leather, cosmetic applications in beauty, and cellular scaffolding for plant- and cell-based meats.

Previously, she worked as a Community Garden Organizer at Capital Roots and helped to manage over 50 vegetable gardens in the Capital District.
