Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin

Co-Founders of theSkimm Subscription Newsletter with Over 7 Million Subscribers

Co-founders and Co-CEOs of theSkimm Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg have fundamentally changed the way millions of millennial women receive news and stay informed. In 2012, with just two laptops and their couch, the former NBC news producers launched theSkimm as a membership digital media company that would curate the most important news items in culture, politics, and tech. By offering short, relatable updates that fit specifically into the routines of intelligent, busy working-class readers, theSkimm became the first news outlet to saturate a then-untouched sector of the market.

Beginning as an email newsletter, the Daily Skimm became the fastest growing on the market with an engaged community of approximately seven million Daily Skimm subscribers. It has since expanded to include theSkimm app, which debuted at #1 in news and #9 overall in the Apple App Store, Skimm Studies, Skimm Reads, Skimm Picks, and Skimm Notes.

theSkimm’s production arm, Skimm Studios, develops and creates new, innovative video and audio content and original programming. Their new podcast, “Skimm’d from The Couch,” reached #1 on Apple Podcasts within hours of launching, and their video series, “Sip ‘n Skimm,” “Skimm’d with…” and “Get Off The Couch,” have featured many notable media personalities, politicians, and celebrities.

Following a $12 million funding round with investors, including Shonda Rhimes and Tyra Banks, Skimm Studios and Katie Couric Media are co-producing Getting There, a short-form, female-focused online video series hosted by Couric and airing on theSkimm's social media channels.

Expanding on the company’s mission of informative but digestible news, Carly and Danielle launched No Excuses, a nonpartisan platform to mobilize and inform their audience about politics. First introduced around the 2016 presidential election, theSkimm registered more than 110,000 Americans to vote, and continues to tackle the issues driving the national conversation.

From building their business ground-up and hiring a team to fundraising, finding investors, and assembling a community of millions of dedicated ‘Skimm’bassadors,’ Carly and Danielle have made themselves into two of the most recognizable and influential female entrepreneurs of this decade. theSkimm now boasts 72 full-time employees and has raised $29 million to date.

They have been featured on a number of prominent lists including Forbes 30 Under 30 in Media, Vanity Fair’s The Next Establishment, Fortune’s 40 Under 40, Adweek’s Young Influentials, and were included on Goldman Sachs' Builders and Innovators Summit as one of the most 100 Intriguing Entrepreneurs. They still prefer to work from a couch.
