A two-time recipient of the Davey O'Brien Award in 1995 and 1996, Wuerffel was also recognized as the NCAA Quarterback of the Year and named the SEC Football Player of the Year twice.

During his time as a college player, Wuerffel was part of the 1996 Florida Gators football team that claimed the consensus national championship. He was a starting quarterback for the Florida Gators from 1993 to 1996, and subsequently for the New Orleans Saints from 1997 to 1998, and the Washington Commanders in 2002. In 2000, he played as a starting quarterback for the Rhein Fire, resulting in a World Bowl championship.

After retiring from the NFL in 2004, Wuerffel took the helm of Desire Street Ministries, a non-profit organization that focuses on community development and support in impoverished neighborhoods.
