Danny Wuerffel

Heisman Trophy-winning Quarterback & Philanthropist

Danny Wuerffel is a philanthropist and retired football player. He was the recipient of the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1996 when he played for the University of Florida.

Wuerffel is the son of an Air Force chaplain and grew up in the Destin area. At Fort Walton Beach High School, he won the Florida state football championship. While in college, Wuerffel played quarterback for the Florida Gators under Steve Spurrier. His teams won 4 consecutive Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles between 1993 and 1996. Wuerffel led the Gators to the 1996 National Championship and won handily 52-20 over their archrival Florida State University at the 1997 Nokia Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Danny Wuerffel broke almost every quarterback record at the University of Florida and many in the NCAA during his career. In 1996, he became the first athlete in the collegiate ranks to win the Heisman and Draddy (NCAA student-athlete of the year) trophies in a single season. He won several awards, including the William V. Campbell Award, given to the nation’s top scholar-athlete. Danny graduated with high honors earning a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations.

Danny also speaks to college groups, such as the University of Florida Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Wuerffel also co-authored a book in 2004 called Tales from the Gator Swamp, about his football career at the University of Florida.

He played seven seasons in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Washington Redskins. After the NFL, Danny was a star in NFL Europe. He won the MVP award in the 2000 World Bowl while playing for the Rhein Fire. The Fire beat the Scottish Claymores 13-10 to win the championship.

Wuerffel is a devout Christian and a member of the Presbyterian Church in America. After he retired from football, Wuerffel felt called to serve those in under-resourced neighborhoods. He began working at Desire Street Ministries, a non-profit faith-based organization focusing on spiritual and community development in New Orleans. The ministry helps under-resourced areas across the Southeast by partnering with leaders to create thriving and sustainable neighborhoods.

He began involvement with the organization while he played for the Saints. He became the Director of Desire Street Ministries in 2006, as the organization attempted to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Danny is the namesake of the Wuerffel Trophy, the premier college football award for community service. And in 2013, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
