Darren Neuberger was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan Canada. He is the youngest of four boys and older sibling to his sister, Michelle. He credits his three brothers for his motivation to excel at all things sports-related, as he always wanted to prove that he could play with the big kids. Baseball was the sport of choice for Neuberger, and throughout his career as a player and coach, he was a part of the National Champion, Western Canadian and numerous Provincial winning teams.
Neuberger married the love of his life in 2000. At the same time, he hid a gambling addiction from his new bride as well as family and friends. Neuberger’s addiction was discovered in late 2000, and he soon joined Gamblers Anonymous to get his life back on track. Although Neuberger stopped gambling, he still had to live with the “after gambling” emotional roller coaster, which plagued him until December 2002. Neuberger says that, for him, facing & living up to what he did as an addict and eating his humble pie was more difficult on the psyche than living as an active addict. The year 2003 saw new beginnings. For the first time in a long time, he could look at himself in the mirror and feel okay with the person who looked back at him. Neuberger’s life was starting to move forward, but another devastating blow was on the horizon.
Neuberger was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on August 5, 2003 at the age of 34. After spending two years in treatment, Neuberger entered complete remission. He calls this experience the “greatest wake up call ever”. After his recovery, Neuberger became very vocal about cancer in young adults and shared his story at events like TEDx in 2013. He has also spokenl about the business of living– more importantly, inspiring others to start living.
Neuberger is a Certified Empowerment Coach and published author of “Let’s Talk About It: Inspiring Stories From Young Adult Cancer Survivors”. Neuberger likes to call himself a thought-provoker, as his messages make attendees think about the people, places and things in their lives, and consider whether they are on the path that they truly want and need to be on.
Neuberger’s mantra is “live life to the fullest” and he has built his foundation around the three L’s: Live Through It, Learn From It, and Let Go Of It. These are based on personal experiences from acceptance after addiction to cancer and recovery. He has built a very strong presence on social media as his inspirational and thought provoking page, Red’s Daily Jolt, has thousands of followers across multiple social media avenues.
