Project Manager, Net Power Demonstration Plant

David Freed is the project manager of NetPower, which is building a 50 megawatt power plant in Texas that will burn natural gas, but emit no carbon dioxide. The trick is in the plant's revolutionary design, utilizing something called the Allam Cycle, named after its inventor Rodney Allam. Most fossil fuel burning power plants operate on a steam cycle, where the heat from combustion heats water to spin turbines. The NetPower plant is different, in that its so-called working fluid is not steam, but rather carbon dioxide. Supercritical carbon dioxide will spin this plant's turbines, CO2 that is captured from the combustion process and can be readily directed into a pipeline. From there the carbon dioxide will be sold to oil companies which inject it into worn out oil fields.
