David Madland    

Managing Director, "American Progress;" Director, "American Worker Project;" Author, "Hollowed Out"

David Madland is the Director of the American Worker Project at American Progress. He has written extensively about the economy and American politics in such places as The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, appeared frequently on CNN, CSPAN, and Fox News, and has been a guest on dozens of radio talk shows across the United States. Madland writes regularly about unions, retirement policy, and public opinion. His current work focuses on the importance of the middle class to the economy and democracy, as well as policies to restore the strength of the middle class.

Madland has a doctorate in government from Georgetown University and received his bachelor of science from the University of California, Berkeley. His dissertation about the decline of the U.S. pension system was honored as the best dissertation of the year by the Labor and Employment Relations Association. Madland is the co-author of Interest Groups in Elections, a book about the role and influence of interest groups in American democracy and is the author of a number of academic articles. He has worked on economic policy for Rep. George Miller (D-CA) and has consulted for several labor unions.
