Rehabilitation Innovation Specialist & Long COVID Expert; Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine

David Putrino is a renowned physical therapist and neuroscientist, known for his pioneering work at the intersection of technology and rehabilitation. He is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Director of Rehabilitation Innovation for the Mount Sinai Health System where he leads a multidisciplinary team focused on healthcare innovation and how it touches many spheres of health, disability and human performance.

At Mount Sinai, Putrino directs the Abilities Research Center, a unique hybrid research lab and clinic dedicated to developing and rapidly deploying advanced technologies -- including motion capture, virtual and augmented reality, and wearable and implantable devices -- to help individuals achieve their full potential. Beyond his clinical and basic science research, Dr. Putrino collaborates with partners such as Red Bull, the Brooklyn Nets NBA team, and the US Olympic team using cutting-edge techniques to enhance performance and aid in injury recovery. Additionally, he serves as the "Chief Mad Scientist" at Not Impossible Labs, an organization that creates disruptive technological solutions for pressing humanitarian challenges. His expertise has also been instrumental in developing virtual reality and telehealth solutions to provide remote care for patients with complex rehabilitation needs.

Putrino is also the Nash Family Director of the Cohen Center for Recovery from Complex Chronic Illness at Mount Sinai, a newly established center dedicated to treating infection-associated complex conditions, including Long COVID and chronic tick- and vector-borne diseases. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Putrino has gained global recognition as a leading expert in the assessment, treatment, and underlying pathophysiology of Long COVID. His team has cared for over 3,000 patients with Long COVID and has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers on the subject.

Putrino is a prolific writer and speaker. He has co-authored numerous scientific publications and his research has been featured in various media outlets, such as ABC, Sports Illustrated, the Wall Street Journal, the BBC, Time, Wired and the LA Times. He is the author of "Hacking Health: How to Make Money and Save Lives in the HealthTech World," and his work is featured in the full-length HBO feature documentary "Quad Gods."

Putrino was clinically trained as a physiotherapist at Curtin University of Technology in Perth before completing a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Western Australia, followed by postdoctoral studies at Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University. His early research was centered on understanding the neural mechanisms of movement and developing strategies to enhance motor recovery in individuals with neurological impairments.

Speech Topics

Long COVID and Other Complex Chronic Illnesses

The COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the greatest mass-disabling events in history due to the emergence of Long COVID as an Infection-Associated Complex Chronic illness. In this talk, Dr. David Putrino will detail how seemingly harmless infections can lead to serious chronic health conditions in some that can impact every aspect of daily life. He will discuss the current state of the science surrounding diagnosis, treatment and emerging research concerning Long COVID and will also discuss differences and similarities between Long COVID and other complex chronic illnesses such as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and chronic Lyme Disease. Delving deep into these topics will teach the audience the science behind how persistent infections can significantly affect every aspect of health: physical, emotional and cognitive and how you can manage your own risk of developing infection-associated chronic illnesses.

Brain Computer Interfaces: The Future of Neurotechnology

Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are emerging technologies that use a person's brain activity to control external technologies like computers, robotic prostheses and smart home technology. While these technologies were once purely the domain of science fiction, in recent years a number of companies have made impressive progress in bringing BCI technology into the consumer space. In this talk, Dr. David Putrino will share his experiences running the first-in-human clinical trials for novel BCI technology, discuss the current and future applications of this technology and share an inside look at the long-term strategies behind bringing these technologies to market for the everyday consumer. From restoring independence to telepathy, nothing is outside the realm of possibility with these exciting new technologies.

Resilience, Grit, & Performance Under Pressure

One of the strongest predictors of success in high performance environments is mental preparedness and the ability to perform under pressure. This fact is often overlooked as people favor an excessive focus on skill-based training which often leads to failure of an individual or a team when the pressure is on.

In this talk, David Putrino will share insights from over a decade of working in high performance sports and special forces operators. He will explain the scientific concepts of resilience, grit, and perseverance—some of the cornerstones of performance under pressure. He will detail his process for preparing high performance athletes and soldiers for the high-pressure environments that they need to face, and how his team evaluates and adapts team dynamics within an organization in order to ensure optimal team performance when it counts. Finally, he will walk you through how to take steps in your own life to boost your mental strength and help you achieve optimal performance every day.

Never Give Up

A survivor of brain injury as a young child, David Putrino knows firsthand the importance of never giving up. Now that he works in a hospital, his daily inspiration comes from his patients who are often fighting to recover what was lost after a sudden life challenge.

In this talk, Dr Putrino will share some of the stories that embody the strength of the human spirit: some of his most memorable patients and friends fighting back against all odds. He will discuss the importance of communication and correct messaging in healthcare, how doctors often get it wrong, and how to strongly and effectively advocate for yourself and your family in a tough situation. Most of all, he will detail how maintaining a positive mindset, through all the hurdles that might possibly pop up, can make all the difference in recovery and in life—helping you to achieve the impossible.

Exploring The Limits of Human Performance

For as long as medicine has been a profession, our doctors have only been there for us when we felt like something was wrong with our bodies, but that is about to change. What if we told you that you could be better: stronger, smarter, happier and more energetic?

This is the premise of a new center being led by David Putrino at Mount Sinai called Performance360 - which is all about helping you take your human performance to the absolute limit.

In this talk, Dr. Putrino will highlight the work he has done with his high-performance partners in the world of athletic performance and longevity medicine. He will describe the process he uses to create models of human performance that guide the training patterns of some of the best athletes in the world and explain how you can implement similar models into your own life so that you, too, can explore your own limits and enhance your horizons for health, wellness and longevity.

The Future of Medicine

As the Founder and Director of the Abilities Research Center, David Putrino has been at the center of nearly every health technology trend you can think of—from robotics and wearable technology, to virtual reality and artificial intelligence (AI). However, living at the nexus of technology and healthcare is not always as glamorous as it seems, and in his book, Hacking Health: How to make money and save lives in the HealthTech world, Dr Putrino explains why almost 98% of health technology companies are doomed to fail before they even touch a patient.

In this talk, David will walk you through the proof, pain, and potential surrounding bringing new technologies into healthcare. He will explain how his team routinely navigates the regulatory environment surrounding new technologies in order to bring the latest innovations to his patients as quickly, and responsibly, as humanly possible.

How To Be An Innovator

Innovation is one of the most prominent topics in today’s business world. Everyone wants to know what it is, how to get it, and how to use it, but as a concept, innovation is often elusive. Many innovations look like an accident or a fluke, but the reality is that if you really understand how to innovate, it is as repeatable as any other process.

In this talk, David Putrino discusses some examples of disruptive innovation that he has led in the healthcare and sports performance world—from developing a 3D-printed prosthetics clinic in South Sudan, to the foundation of a nation-wide health monitoring program for older adults that has prevented thousands of hospitalizations. He walks the audience through his process of innovation and teaches people how to identify their own opportunities for innovation.
