A senior writer at FORTUNE magazine since 1996, David Whitford joined FSB: FORTUNE Small Business in 2001 as an editor-at-large. Whitford writes a monthly column, “Drinks With”, and was the writer of the recent feature, “Our Generation: An Entrepreneurial Family's Tale of Horror and Hope," about the post September 11th murder of a Mesa, Arizona gas station owner, Balbir Singh Sodhi. Prior to joining FORTUNE and FSB, Whitford was a senior writer at INC magazine, a senior editor at Fidelity Investments, and a noted freelance writer of books and articles. With writing expertise and interests that extend beyond finance and business, Whitford has published three sports-related books − one on corruption in college football, and two on baseball. He is also a regular television commentator and has appeared on Nightline, the Today Show, and the O’Reilly Factor. A native of Wayne, PA, Whitford is a graduate of Brown University with a major in history, and has a graduate degree in journalism from Columbia University. Whitford is an active member of the Newspaper Guild of NY. A longtime member of the National Writers Union, he was a named plaintiff in the landmark case, Tasini vs. The New York Times, which went all the way to the Supreme Court in April 2001, guaranteeing important rights for freelance writers. Whitford lives in Arlington, Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters.
