Dawnn Lewis is a multitalented individual well-known for her significant contributions to both the entertainment industry and community service. She gained fame from her roles on the television shows "A Different World," where she also composed the show's theme song, and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper." Lewis's talents extend beyond acting, as she is a Grammy Award-winning singer and a multiple ASCAP & BMI Award-winning songwriter. She has appeared in films such as "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" and "DreamGirls," and has had recurring roles on "One Tree Hill" and "The Secret Life of An American Teenager."
Currently, Lewis continues to captivate audiences with her role as “Serena” in the ETC production of Gershwin’s "Porgy & Bess." She is also involved in television, appearing in series like "Major Crimes" on TNT and "The Legend of Master Legend" on Amazon. Her voice acting credits include roles in "Futurama," "Sophia the First," "Doc McStuffins," and major films like "Inside Out" and "Monsters University."
Beyond her performing career, Lewis is a dedicated philanthropist. She recently co-produced and co-hosted "A NEW DAY: Concert For A Cause – The Entertainment Family Gives Back!"—an all-star fundraising concert benefiting non-profit organizations serving the inner-city community. Her commitment to community service is further exemplified by her involvement with the National Advisory Board of the National Center for Civil & Human Rights and her work with The Los Angeles Urban League and The United Negro College Fund. Lewis also completed her fourth term on the SAG National Board of Directors.
Lewis has started her own record label, Morning Jewel Music, and her albums "Worth Waiting For" and "Donny McCullough & Friends: Candles in the Window" are available on platforms like Amazon and iTunes. Her dedication to the arts extends to education; she regularly teaches Master Classes, mentors youth, and delivers motivational lectures. This ongoing engagement in various aspects of the entertainment industry and her active role in community betterment demonstrate her comprehensive and sustained impact both on and off the screen.
