Deborah Kenny            

Founder of Harlem Village Academies & the Progressive Education Institute

Deborah Kenny is the founder of the Progressive Education Institute, author of "Born to Rise," and founder and CEO of Harlem Village Academies, a network of K-12 progressive charter schools in Harlem, New York. She is widely regarded as one of the most influential educators in the country.

Previously, Kenny served as Group President of Sesame Street Publishing, and as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development of Time Warner's Parenting Group. She is a former classroom teacher with expertise in youth leadership training and curriculum development.

Dr. Kenny was honored with the Columbia University Teachers College Distinguished Alumni Award, has been named on Oprah’s Power List and Esquire’s Best and Brightest, and is regularly featured in national media.

She holds a PhD in comparative international education from Columbia University and a BA in intellectual history from the University of Pennsylvania.
