Deepika Kurup

Inventor, Scientist, Winner of the National Geographic Explorer Award in the Google Science Fair 2015

Deepika has invented an inexpensive method of purifying water that utilizes sunlight and a photo-catylytic composite of titanium dioxide and silver nitrate. A catylytic rod is placed in a container of water, which is exposed to the sun for a few hours, resulting in near total eradication of coliform and e-coli contaminants. For her invention, Deepika won first prize in the 2012 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and the 2014 U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
