Delta Spirit

American Indie Rock Band

Delta Spirit is an American indie band from San Diego, California consisting of Jon Jameson (bass), Brandon Young (percussion), Matthew Vasquez (vocals/guitars), Kelly Winrich (multi-instrumentalist) and Will McLaren (guitar).

The group combines unconventional instruments such as trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums, multi-instrumentalism and spiritually themed lyrics into a hybrid of rock and northern soul. The band got its name from Jameson's great uncle, who was a flight control operator near Birmingham, Alabama. He also ran a company, “Delta Spirit Taxidermy Station of North Central Alabama.”

The band released their debut EP, “I Think I've Found It,” on Monarchy Music in 2006. The band produced and recorded their 2008 debut full-length album, “Ode to Sunshine” in a cabin in the San Diego mountains.

The album also featured the song “Trashcan” which was named after the unusual use of a trashcan as an instrument during recording. It was re-released with new artwork and a new version of the song “Streetwalker” in August 2008, by Rounder Records, reaching #16 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.

Their second album, “History From Below,” was released in June 2010. The album entered the Billboard 200 Albums chart at #179 and at #8 on the Heatseekers Albums chart.

In 2012 they released their third album, “Delta Spirit,” on Rounder Records. It debuted at #1 on the Heatseekers Albums chart, while also reaching #15 ion the Alternative Albums chart and #103 on the Billboard 200.
