Dr. Dexter R. Voisin is among the top 2 percent of experts in the world on mental health, youth, and violence. He is a licensed psychotherapist and author of America the Beautiful and Violent: Black Youth and Neighborhood Trauma in Chicago, published by Columbia University Press. Dexter has authored more than 200 articles that have studied how neighborhood, police, and racial violence have led to negative education and public health outcomes for US Black populations and the factors that promote resiliency in the face of structural inequalities. He is a frequent contributor to members of the national and international media.

Born in the West Indies to a working-class family, Dexter speaks with "unmistakable clarity, sophistication, urgency, and inspiration on issues of race, class, gender, and the complexities inherent in achieving the American Dream.” He effectively employs humor, critical reflection, and inspiration to illustrate how we can all work together to address the effects of human-made issues like racialized poverty, which affects all of us.

Dexter earned a master's in philosophy and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He enjoys global travel, exploring new cultures and architectural design, and spending time with family and loved ones.
