Diana Salazar Méndez, an Ecuadorian jurist and lawyer, currently holds the office of the Attorney-General of Ecuador. Her journey began working in the Pichincha Prosecutor's Office at the age of 20, leading her to become a prosecutor for the south of the capital. Salazar's education includes a degree in Political and Social Sciences from the Central University of Ecuador and a master's degree in Procedural Law with a Criminal mention from the Indoamérica Technological University. This solid background set the stage for her later investigations into high-profile corruption cases.
Salazar's notable accomplishments include directing investigations into the 2015 FIFA corruption case and the Odebrecht scandal. In April 2019, she stepped into the role of the Attorney General of Ecuador, marking a historic moment as the first Black woman to hold this position in the state. Under her leadership, operation Metastasis was executed, leading to the arrest of the president of the Judiciary and a senior police figure for organized crime and drug trafficking. Her work targets violent and well-connected drug traffickers who pose a threat to Ecuador's stability.
Despite numerous attempts to impeach her and threats against her and her family, Salazar's dedication to justice remains steadfast. In 2021, she received the International Anticorruption Champions Award, in recognition of "people who have worked tirelessly, usually in the face of many adversities, to defend transparency, combat corruption and ensure accountability in their countries," awarded by the Department of State of the United States of America. This recognition is added to 27 others, including institutional, national, and international, received for their professional career and fight against corruption. Her influence and determination have earned her recognition as one of the 100 most influential people in 2024.
