DJ Jazzy Jeff

Grammy Award-Winning Hip-Hop & DJ Pioneer & Producer; One Half of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince Known for "Summertime"

DJ Jazzy Jeff is a pioneering figure in hip-hop and DJ culture. He gained worldwide fame in the late 1980s as part of the iconic duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, alongside his longtime collaborator and friend Will Smith. Their blend of smooth, family-friendly rap and Jeff’s innovative turntablism set them apart in a burgeoning hip-hop scene. Together, they released hit songs like “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “Summertime,” earning them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989. They also won a Grammy for the song "Summertime."

Jeff's skills as a DJ and producer revolutionized the art of turntablism. He is credited with popularizing the "transformer scratch," a DJ technique that became a fundamental element in hip-hop music. As a producer, he had a significant influence on the sound of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince's albums, helping to craft the duo's signature style that balanced light-hearted storytelling with infectious beats. Beyond his work with Will Smith, Jeff has produced tracks for a range of artists across genres, including Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, and Eminem.

After the duo’s amicable split in the mid-1990s, DJ Jazzy Jeff continued to evolve as a solo artist and producer. He founded his own production company, A Touch of Jazz, which played a key role in shaping the neo-soul movement by producing music for artists like Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, and The Roots. Jeff also released several solo projects, including "The Magnificent," "The Return of the Magnificent," featuring artists like Method Man and Big Daddy Kane, and "M3."

Even after decades in the industry, DJ Jazzy Jeff remains a respected figure in music, constantly touring and performing at major festivals worldwide. He has performed with Will Smith at the Live 8 concert in Philadelphia in 2005, on "The Graham Norton Show" in 2013, and at the MTV Summerblast Music Festival in Croatia and the Livewire Festival in Blackpool in 2017. In 2024, he is set to tour with New Kids on the Block and Paula Abdul on The Magic Summer Tour. He is known for his dynamic live DJ sets and for continuing to push the boundaries of his craft. Jeff has also embraced new technology and platforms, leveraging social media and streaming to reach a global audience. As an ambassador of hip-hop culture, DJ Jazzy Jeff's influence transcends generations, leaving an indelible mark on both the music industry and DJing.
