Dear Event Planner or Booking Coordinator for Speakers/Presenters: Greetings from California! I have been a concert performer since age five and have been speaking professionally since I was a teenager, but the topics of course have evolved and changed as I have traveled around the globe for performances and speaking appearances, meeting people in all walks of life and all types of business. It is therefore quite difficult to describe each of the different categories or subjects of the talks that I have given to fit the specific needs and interests of each event, around the world.
For example, Business: I have been the CEO of two global companies and a hybrid social venture, Listen for Life (www.listenforlife.org) which has now had volunteers, programs, projects, and production centers in over 45 countries, and impacted the lives of over 9 million people thus far. When I first founded this organization I did not realize that my particular vision for strategic planning and management structure within a global hybrid venture would be considered unique for its time. Even now, this hybrid structure itself is still considered fairly unusual, but its model for self-sustaining development and scalability has received many accolades, so I am often asked to speak about that topic to business-related conferences. Or, I am asked to simply talk about Listen for Life and its many projects, or share my observations and experience on what it takes to recruit volunteers and/or paid employees from around the world, and help them grow and prosper professionally and emotionally, while keeping them focused on one shared mission. It is not unlike what is faced in every business and organization in the world when trying to develop and reward people for their contributions while achieving common goals - but I have been told that the hybrid model I created is of particular value since it combines non-profit and commercial activities in a self-sustaining ecosystem. There are some important lessons from the model that can help businesses as they determine how to create and lead organizations.
Or talks related to Non-profit, NGO, UN Millennium Development Goals, cross-cultural diversity, production:
I have also been asked to speak to various UN-related organizaions in Geneva on the use of music to address conflict resolution, cross-cultural diversity training, international education initiatives, and peace-building causes through increased understanding and appreciation of other cultures. These invitations arose because of a successful cross-cultural television series I designed and produced called Travels with Music, which has now been licensed to the BBC and other digital networks worldwide - so I am also very often invited to speak directly to educators or producers about the making of this series, which explores unique cultures around the world using their master musicians as the tour guides. These presentations are then in multimedia format and fully interactive.
.
Whether your organization/event is for a business, corporation, association, or educational institution, important topics such as listening skills, communication, diversity training, cultural preservation or inspirational leadership can all be addressed in a very unique way through music, and from the rather unusual background and view of a world-renowned musician.
or simply about Listen for Life, raising global awareness; TV/media: And of course I love talking about our organization and its mission. Listen for Life was founded to raise awareness of what is happening to music and musicians in many cultures worldwide. But now its projects use music to address a tremendous variety of issues, needs and causes around the globe. Our primary goal is to restore music as a unifying force for good worldwide, and we achieve that by offering musicians of each culture the chance to serve others with their gifts and create programs that make a difference in their communities, while hopefully inspiring the music listeners to help their musicians to survive and sustain themselves, their families and their communities in the process.
The hybrid social venture also has a for-profit media brand and channel, passportM Ltd, which was created when I was offered my own 24-hour television channel on networks in Europe. So sometimes I am asked to speak about media or music-television or the world of musicians and business and fundraising or investing adventures.....
Youth, Education, Violence prevention and motivation: one of Listen for Life's most successful and necessary projects is called the MusicMessage Campaign. We got into schools, use multimedia and live performance to show the students both the positive and negative/violence-inducing effects caused by the lyrics of the songs they listen to, day in and day out. Then our musicians work one on one with the kids to help them write their own positive musicmessages (song lyrics or melodies)about peace, which we send to other students on mobile devices.
But as a Grammy nominee and global performer, if you want a speaking event that is truly unique, I can offer the following:
If you have a baby-grand piano anywhere on stage or in the room at your event site, then I would be happy to give a presentation combining performance of short classical piano works from many different cultures/countries, talking about each of these works and how they relate to issues of communication, listening skills, relationships, leadership, spirituality, growth and/or motivation.
Here is a partial list of some of the topics that I have covered recently, worldwide:
Music as a channel of communication - in any business, community, culture or life.
"The lyrics DO matter" - {raising awareness of positive/negative influence of the music we hear all day but don't necessarily 'listen' to}; encouraging assertive action in turning off violence-inducing songs while teaching youth to create their our own positive music-messages (songs) that can be used for good.
"Travels with Music" - a unique multimedia presentation that I designed/produced, offering an interactive experience of the worlds' cultures with their master musicians as the tour guides; can be applied for different audiences in varied ways.
The value of music and musicians for addressing conflict resolution, cross-cultural diversity training, international education initiatives, and cause-related funding.
"Having it all" by "GIVING it all (away)" - the experience of selling one's home and possessions to live in a rented apt and serve others Business topics: Creating a successful global ybrid (for-profit/non-profit) social venture organization and the variety of topics this can address in specific presentations: strategic planning, HR considerations, combining paid employees with volunteers in a shared mission across continents, unique business models for self-sustainability through job creation and cultural preservation.
"What have you heard today?" - REALLY listening, and how the music we all surround ourselves with is so much more than just the soundtrack of our lives.
Music is one of our most endangered natural resources! Think it isn't true, given the amount of tracks coming out each day for our Ipods? This presentation will explain why ethnomusicologists tell us we are losing musical "languages", instruments, and/or performers around the globe at the rate of five cultures per year.
"Music is prayer, not performance". (this talk is for spiritual or religious-based conferences or gatherings).
Inspiring each person towards social entrepreneurship - the story of a multi-faceted career as a model of the "letting go" trajectory.
Teachers, how are your communication skills? Music is so much more than the "Mozart effect". As the one universal language, it is a potent channel of communication that has been left largely untapped in the digital age and "No Child Left Behind".
Simply talking about Listen for Life - a global family of music listeners and performers, working together to "restore music as a unifying force for good, worldwide"; thus far our volunteers, projects and programs in 45 countries have made a difference in the lives of over 9 million people - using music!! This multimedia talk highlights stories of some of the major musicians around the world who have either helped others or have been helped thus far by Listen for Life projects, and stories of the ones whom we still need to help - we also outline the Listen for Life projects designed to address specific causes/needs, and hopefully inspire those in the audience to replicate these projects in their own communities.
Again, in locations where a baby grand piano is available, I combine performance into my talk/presentation, with ANY of the above topics, OR I can also do a performance-focused speaking/playing program called "around the world in 80 minutes" in which I share short pieces from many different cultures/countries and introduce each piece with entertaining information about each composer, culture, and my own travel experiences to that location. This is one of my most popular presentations.
Very warmest wishes to you and I look forward to meeting your audience soon!
