Doug E. Fresh

Rapper, Record Producer, Beatboxer; Known as the "Human Beat Box"

Douglas Davis, better known by his stage name Doug E. Fresh, is a Barbadian-American rapper, record producer and beatboxer, also known as the "Human Beat Box." The pioneer of 20th-century American beatboxing, Fresh is able to accurately imitate drum machines and various special effects using only his mouth, lips, gums, throat, tongue and a microphone.

He had a string of hit singles with his then-partner Slick Rick in the early and mid-1980s, most notably on "The Show" and "La-Di-Da-Di" in 1985. A subsequent album, Oh, My God, included guest stints from veteran jazz trumpeter Jimmy Owens and synthesizer player Bernard Wright.

Fresh also released a 1988 follow-up album, The World's Greatest Entertainer, and recorded an album in 1992 for M.C. Hammer's short-lived Capitol/EMI Records-distributed label, Bust It Records. On September 26, 1995, Fresh released his fourth album, Play. The album peaked at #81 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, but several singles -- "Where's da Party At?" "Freaks," "Hands in the Air," and "I-ight" -- all made it to the Hot Rap Singles chart.

Doug E. Fresh is a member of the Church of Scientology. He performed for a large audience at the Scientology Celebrity Center's Anniversary Gala in 2004. He also performed two tracks on the Scientology music album The Joy of Creating (other artists appearing included Isaac Hayes, Chick Corea, Edgar Winter, and Carl Anderson).
