Doug Sanders

Winner of Twenty PGA Tour Events

Doug Sanders was born on July 24, 1933 in Cedartown, Georgia. A poor boy from the backwoods in Georgia, he picked cotton as a youngster. He attended the University of Florida on a golf scholarship by winning the National Junior Chamber of Commerce Tournament and was the subject of a film called, "The Boy Next Door". After attending the University of Florida, Sanders became the first amateur to win the Canadian open.

Doug joined the tour in 1957 and has won 20 PGA Pro Tournaments. There have been only 6 golfers in the world who turned pro since 1957, who have won more than 20 PGA Tour Championships on the regular tour. He's had winnings of over $1 million. Doug counts himself fortunate for turning pro at a time when television gave such excellent coverage to the tournaments and the purses made it worthwhile to play.

Sanders was one of the first to promote the Seniors Tour with his own Celebrity Classic and joined the Seniors Tour in 1983. Later that year he won the World Seniors Invitational.

He has always been known as a stylish, flamboyant dresser on the golf course, thus earning his name "Peacock of the Fairways". ESQUIRE named him as one of America's " Ten best dressed Jocks" in 1973.

It is said that the two most frequently asked questions on the Senior PGA Tour were"What did Arnold Palmer shoot?" and "What is Doug Sander's wearing?"

For nearly twenty years, Doug has sponsored the Doug Sanders International Junior Golf Championship. The Championship brings together young players from six continents for an annual competition in Aberdeen, Scotland. Sanders contributions have benefited a number of organizations including: Texas Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Sunshine Kids, Depelchin Children's Home, Ronald McDonald House, Camp Periwinkle, Easter Seals and an amazing $100,000 contribution to the Betty Ford Center, as well as $176,000 to the UMCF.

Sanders often states, "I'm as rich as any man or woman in the world because I weigh and measure my wealth by friends, and golf has given me that opportunity."
