Reader in Psychology at the University of Surrey; Expert on Behavior Change & the Psychology of Habitual Behavior

Dr. Benjamin Gardner is recognized internationally as an expert researcher, lecturer, and public speaker in the psychology of habitual behavior. Over his 15+ years of research in behavioral science, he has published over 150 research papers and book chapters, mostly exploring how the concept of 'habit' can be used to understand and change everyday human behaviors, with a special focus on health-related behaviors. He has given talks and hosted seminars and workshops with academic, practitioner, commercial, and public audiences across the UK and Europe, as well as in Australia, Canada, Singapore, and the USA. Formerly a senior lecturer at King's College London, Dr. Gardner is now a Reader in Psychology at the University of Surrey.

Dr. Gardner is co-lead of the European Health Psychology Society Habit Special Interest Group and has led funded research projects to develop novel habit-based interventions to reduce sedentary behavior in office workers and older adults. He is Deputy Editor of the British Journal of Health Psychology and holds editorial board positions at the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, Social Science & Medicine, and Health Psychology Review. He is a chartered member of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr. Gardner has provided consultancy to various commercial, charity, and public sector organizations, including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the NHS. He has given interviews (including live to air) about his work to various media outlets, including radio (e.g., BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 5), newspapers (e.g., Financial Times, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal), magazines (e.g., The Economist, Time), and has written pieces for public audiences (e.g., The Observer).
