Dr. Kevin Boudreau      

Professor at Harvard Business School and London Business School; Strategy and Innovation Expert

Dr. Boudreau teaches business strategy and innovation at the Harvard Business School and London Business School.

Dr. Boudreau studies business strategy, innovation and policy in sectors especially shaped by technology, science, data and digitization. In particular, he has designed and authored a series of leading studies on the economics and management of platforms and innovation. This includes detailed empirical research in areas such as multi-sided markets, crowdsourcing, social networks, wikis, open source, open science--and other approaches to organizing very large numbers of “external” innovators.

Dr. Boudreau's work has been published in a range of research journals including Management Science, the RAND Journal of Economics, various NBER publications, Organization Science, Research Policy, Nature Biotech, the Strategic Management Journal, along with practitioner journals, such as the Harvard Business Review and Nature Biotech. He is an assistant editor of Management Science in its Business Strategy department, and in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship department.

Dr. Boudreau received his PhD at MIT in Behavioral and Policy Sciences. Previously, he studied Economics at the University of Toronto and Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Canada, where he was awarded for experiments on heat transfer in microprocessors and where he built statistical analysis tools to analyze defects on microprocessor fab lines.

His academic research is also informed by extensive industry knowledge. He has worked in various engineering, leadership and advisory/consulting roles in technology, science, media, telecoms and data companies and public organizations, including positions at Qualcomm, Braxton Associates (strategy consultants) and the Economist Group. His work spans North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He has helped a variety of entrepreneurial startups, public organizations to large world-leading companies to solve their strategy and innovation problems.
