As a consultant, Todd held positions at Andersen Consulting and Ernst & Young. His consulting experience provided vital insights into the engagement levels of professionals and their sense of purpose at work. This realization prompted him to rededicate his life to studying leadership and success to enhance happiness and genuine purpose in others' lives.

Todd pursued a Ph.D. in Management at the Mays Business School, Department of Management, at Texas A&M University, where he quickly garnered awards for both research and teaching. His academic achievements led to a prestigious Post Doctoral Fellowship and a tenure-track appointment at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

As a professor at Wright State, Todd's teaching focused on leadership courses in the university's nationally ranked MBA program. He earned tenure within three years, became a Full Professor in six years, and was appointed Assistant Dean for MBA and Executive Programs in his seventh year. Throughout his ten years as a faculty member, he received numerous teaching awards, including the Robert J. Kegerreis Distinguished Professor of Teaching. It was in the classroom that he recognized the power of storytelling, which steered him towards his next career as a professional speaker.
