Velma P. Scantlebury, M.D, FACS recently retired from Christiana Care’s Kidney Transplant Program where she served as the Associate Director, and Director of Outpatient Clinics.
She currently holds the position of Professor of Surgery at Texas Christian University (TCU) and University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) and Medical School, in Forth Worth Texas. Dr. Scantlebury also serves as a medical advisor to various organizations and healthcare professionals. She has been named to both the “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Doctors in America” lists multiple times.
Dr. Scantlebury earned her medical degree from Columbia University in New York City. She was an intern and resident in general surgery at Harlem Hospital Center in New York City. She completed her fellowship training in transplantation surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and then joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as an assistant professor of surgery in 1989. She rose to the rank of associate professor prior to her appointment at the University of South Alabama’s Regional Transplant Center in Mobile, Alabama where she served as Professor of Surgery, Director of the Kidney Transplant Program and Assistant Dean of Community Education.
Dr. Scantlebury’s special interests include: researching the end results of donation and transplantation in African Americans, increasing organ donation in the African-American community through education and awareness, increasing the incidence of living donor transplantation by education, and treating viral infections in kidneys.
