Dr. Vincent Lam
Author of "The Headmaster's Wager," "Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures;" Emergency Room Physician
From the expatriate Chinese community of Vietnam and born in Canada, Dr. Vincent Lam is an author and emergency room physician. His international bestseller, "Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures," won Canada’s most prestigious literary prize, the Giller Prize and was adapted for television and broadcast on HBO Canada. He is also a lecturer with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. Lam’s latest book is "The Headmaster’s Wager," a riveting story of love, betrayal and sacrifice which is set within the Chinese community of Saigon, during the Vietnam War. "The Headmaster’s Wager" was a finalist for the 2012 Governor General’s Literary Award, and was chosen by the American Library Association’s Reference and User Services Association as a notable book for 2013.
A celebrated speaker, his keynotes explore the idea that both the medical and literary practices are, at their core, narrative arts, while making the case that the core of human caring must always remain an act of shared story-telling. Lam delivered the Twentieth Annual Harriett W. Sheridan Literature and Medicine Lecture at Brown University, was the inaugural speaker at Columbia University’s Narrative Medicine Rounds series, and has addressed audiences at numerous national conferences, university events, and international literary festivals. He is an ideal keynote speaker for colleges and universities (particularly FYE programs and course adoptions), hospitals, medical associations, libraries, and literary festivals.
