Matt and Ross Duffer, professionally known as the Duffer Brothers, are American twin filmmakers celebrated for their contributions to science fiction and horror genres in both film and television. Widely recognized for their creation of the acclaimed Netflix series "Stranger Things" in 2016 and the horror film "Hidden" in 2015, the duo has left an indelible mark on popular culture.
Raised in Durham, North Carolina, the brothers discovered their passion for filmmaking early on, crafting their first films in third grade with a Hi8 video camera gifted by their parents. This early experimentation laid the groundwork for their future careers. They later pursued their cinematic aspirations at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts in Orange, California, graduating in 2007.
Following graduation, the Duffer Brothers delved into the industry, honing their skills by writing and directing several short films. Their talent was recognized when Warner Bros. acquired their script for the post-apocalyptic horror film "Hidden," which they subsequently directed and released in 2015. This endeavor garnered attention and opened doors for them in the television industry.
Their break came when director M. Night Shyamalan was impressed by their work and enlisted them as writer-producers for the Fox television series "Wayward Pines." Building on this experience, the brothers began developing their own concept for "Stranger Things," a nostalgic homage to 1980s pop culture that seamlessly blends elements of science fiction and horror.
With the backing of Dan Cohen and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps production company, "Stranger Things" found a home at Netflix, captivating audiences with its compelling narrative set in 1983 Indiana. Drawing inspiration from iconic figures such as Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Stephen King, and George Lucas, the series has become a cultural phenomenon, resonating with viewers worldwide.
Through their innovative storytelling and distinctive aesthetic, the Duffer Brothers continue to captivate audiences, solidifying their status as visionary creators in the realm of entertainment.
