Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy

Ed Vaizey MP was appointed Minister of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, with responsibility for digital industries on 15 July 2014. He is the Conservative MP for Wantage and Didcot.

Education

Ed was educated at Merton College, Oxford. Political career

He was Shadow Minister for the Arts from 2006 to 2010. In 2004 he became a political speech writer. He was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries in May 2010. Career outside politics

After university he worked as a political researcher, before training and practising as a barrister. From 1996 to 2004 he was director of a public relations company. Personal life

Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy This role is shared between the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

BIS responsibilities:

• digital economy

• digital entrepreneurship

• cyber and business resilience

• digital skills

• EU single digital market

• senior relationship management of Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, Huawei and other digital industry companies

• Co-chair of the Smart Cities Forum

DCMS responsibilities:

• broadband delivery (also including mobile infrastructure project)

• telecommunications policy

• media policy

• creative industries
