Edmund Morris

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Presidential Biographer

Edmund Morris emigrated to the United States in 1968 and became a freelance writer and citizen. His biography "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award in 1980, and in 2001 its presidential sequel, Theodore Rex, was a Los Angeles Times Book Prize winner and a bestseller. Colonel Roosevelt, the final volume of Morris’s trilogy on the great “Teddy,” was published by Random House in November 2010. The three books have over 1.5 million copies in print.

"This Living Hand: And Other Essays", Edmund Morris’ most recent book, is uniquely illustrated with images that the author describes as indispensable to his creative process. This wide ranging collection of essays offers biographical insights into such famous personalities as Henry Adams, Mark Twain, Nadine Gordimer and Glenn Gould, reflecting a lifetime of work from one of our leading contemporary critics and historians.

His book "Beethoven: The Universal Composer," has been praised by The Washington Post for “vast reserves of feeling, fancy and intelligence.” A classically trained pianist, Morris recently made his debut at a sold-out concert by nonprofessional musicians in Carnegie Hall. Morris has written extensively for such publications as The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Harper’s Magazine. He has lectured at many venues, including Harvard, Princeton, and Brown universities, the New York Historical Society, the 92nd Street Y, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
