Edward Norton
Academy Award-Winning Actor & Filmmaker Known for "Birdman," "Glass Onion" & "A Complete Unknown"; Environmental Advocate & Social Entrepreneur
Edward Norton is a critically acclaimed actor, filmmaker, and activist known for his compelling performances and commitment to diverse roles. Raised in Columbia, Maryland, Norton’s interest in acting emerged early, leading him to study history at Yale University while participating in theatrical productions. After graduation, he moved to New York City, where he honed his craft in the theater scene before making a remarkable film debut.
Norton rose to fame with his breakout performance in "Primal Fear," where he played a seemingly innocent altar boy accused of murder. The role earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, establishing him as one of Hollywood’s most promising talents. He continued to deliver standout performances, earning additional Academy Award nominations for his roles in "American History X" and "Birdman." His portrayal of a disillusioned corporate worker in "Fight Club" became iconic, and his performance in "The Score" received high praise from critics. Norton also starred in "Red Dragon," which grossed over $200 million, and in "The Italian Job," where his performance was well received despite his participation being due to a contract obligation.
In addition to acting, Norton has made his mark as a director and producer, founding the production company Class 5 Films in 2003. His directorial debut came with the romantic comedy "Keeping the Faith." Norton also directed, produced, and starred in "Motherless Brooklyn," a neo-noir film he adapted from Jonathan Lethem's novel, demonstrating his dedication to bringing complex stories to life. He also directed and produced "Down in the Valley" and "The Painted Veil." Going beyond acting and directing, Norton is also noted for his role in the production and script rewrites of "The Incredible Hulk."
Norton's versatility extends to a range of roles, including his portrayal of Bruce Banner in "The Incredible Hulk" and his memorable roles in ensemble casts such as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Birdman," the latter of which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. He has also starred in recent films like "Motherless Brooklyn" and "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," and he portrayed Pete Seeger in the Bob Dylan biographical film "A Complete Unknown," which earned him Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor.
Beyond his work in entertainment, Norton is a dedicated environmental advocate and social entrepreneur, serving as a trustee of Enterprise Community Partners and president of the American branch of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. He was named the UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity in 2010 and has been an Advisory Council Member for GoodLeap. In addition to these roles, Norton launched an online fundraising platform called Crowdrise in May 2010, and he has been involved in various charitable activities, including running marathons for African conservation and participating in Soccer Aid to raise funds for UNICEF. As an actor and humanitarian, Norton continues to inspire audiences with his artistic contributions and commitment to social impact.
