Elisabeth Moss

Emmy-Nominated Actress Best Known for Her Role as Peggy Olson on "Mad Men"

Elisabeth Moss began acting in 1990, starring in the television movie "Bar Girls." She soon appeared in numerous productions like "Midnight's Child" and an episode of "Anything But Love." In 1993, she provided the voice for the character Michelle in the animated "Once Upon a Forest" and worked with Bette Midler on the television remake of "Gypsy." She soon got a supporting role on the Disney film "Escape to Witch Mountain," before landing roles in "Separate Lives," "The Joyriders" and "Anywhere But Here." In 1999, she portrayed Polly the burn victim alongside Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder in "Girl, Interrupted." Moss also appeared on an episode of "The Practice," and went on to film "Heart of America" in 2003. That same year, she gave her breakthrough performance in the film "Virgin," earning her a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award. She later found herself in Ron Howard's "The Missing" alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett.

Moss landed her most visible role to date on the AMC series "Mad Men" in 2007. The show is set in early 1960s New York City and revolves around the employees of Sterling Cooper, an advertising agency on Madison ("Mad") Avenue.

Moss plays Peggy Olsen, a secretary-turned-copywriter who demands equality with the show's dominant male characters. Moss has earned wide acclaim for her portrayal of Peggy, a character whom critics often describe as a cipher. "I like that they don't understand Peggy," she says. "That makes the performance more interesting." "Mad Men" has since completed its sixth season on AMC and won numerous Golden Globe and Emmy Awards. Moss has received five Emmy nominations for her performance.

In addition to her work on Mad Men, Moss made her Broadway debut in the David Mamet play "Speed-the-Plow" in 2008. She followed that with an appearance on the big screen opposite Jonah Hill and Russell Brand in the 2010 comedy "Get Him to the Greek."

Moss also played detective Robin Griffin in the 2013 Sundance Channel miniseries "Top of the Lake," a co-production by the Sundance Channel, the UK's BBC Two and Australia's UKTV. It was written and directed by Oscar-winner Jane Campion.
