Ellen Kahn  

Director of the Human Rights Council’s Family Project

Since 2005, Ellen Kahn has served as Director of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Children, Youth & Families Program. In her role, Ellen provides national leadership and expertise in public education and advocacy efforts to achieve full equality for LGBT families. Under Ellen’s leadership, the Family Project has launched three highly successful, innovative programs that promote fair and inclusive policies and practices; All Children—All Families; Welcoming Schools; and the Healthcare Equality Index. Ellen is sought out as an expert on LGBT adoption, speaking at numerous national and regional conferences, and providing training for hundreds of child welfare and adoption professionals.

Prior to joining HRC, Ellen spent 13 years at the Whitman-Walker Clinic in various roles; Director of the Lesbian Services Program, Associate Director of LGBT Health Promotion, and as supervisor of a behavioral health program for people with HIV/AIDS.

In addition, Ellen serves as President of the Board of Directors of Rainbow Families DC, the capital area’s support and education organization for LGBT-headed families. She has facilitated “Maybe Baby” groups for 15 years! Ellen received her B.S. from Temple University and her M.S.S. from the Bryn Mawr College School of Social Work and Social Research. Ellen is the proud mom of two fabulous daughters and lives in Silver Spring, MD.
