Emily Nemens

Emily Nemens is coeditor and prose editor of The Southern Review. She grew up in Seattle, Washington, and then studied art history and studio art at Brown University. Before moving to Louisiana, she lived in Brooklyn and worked in editorial capacities at the Metropolitan Museum and the Center for Architecture. She began as the editorial assistant of The Southern Review in 2011, when she also started at LSU’s MFA program in creative writing. At LSU she won prizes for poetry and nonfiction, ran a reading series, and worked with the T. Harry Williams Center for Oral History.

Her first book of stories, Scrub, was published in 2007, and her writing has more recently appeared in The Gettysburg Review, Alimentum, and on Esquire.com. As an illustrator she has collaborated with Harvey Pekar and painted all of the women in the 112th and 113th Congresses, a project that was featured on MSNBC and across the web.
