Emily Sonnett
Defender for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team & the Gotham FC; FIFA Women's World Cup Champion & Olympic Gold Medalist
Emily Ann Sonnett is a soccer player who currently competes for NJ/NY Gotham FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and the United States national team. Known for her versatility, Sonnett can play as a center-back, full-back, or defensive midfielder. She began her career in college soccer at the University of Virginia, earning ACC All-Freshman and All-Tournament Teams. Her professional journey kicked off when she was selected first overall by the Portland Thorns in the 2016 NWSL College Draft, and she has since won two NWSL Championships - with the Thorns in 2017 and the Washington Spirit in 2021.
Sonnett made her first appearance for the senior United States women's national soccer team in 2015 against Brazil. She has been a consistent performer at the international level, securing a place in the United States squad that won the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Sonnett's international achievements also include a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. A testament to her success, Sonnett is a seven-time winner of the invitational SheBelieves Cup.
Beyond these accomplishments, Sonnett's career has seen challenges, such as broken ribs suffered during the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup opener. Despite such setbacks, her determination remains strong. She was traded to OL Reign in 2023 and, in 2024, signed a three-year deal with NJ/NY Gotham FC. Further demonstrating her commitment to the sport, Sonnett has also been involved in various trades throughout her career, including a short-term contract with Swedish Damallsvenskan club Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC in 2020. In addition, she has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, such as being named to the NWSL Best XI and the ACC All-ACC Team.
