Eric Xing is a prominent figure in the field of computer science, with a focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. He is a professor at the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science, where he has led the Center for Machine Learning and Health as the founding director. His academic contributions extend beyond Carnegie Mellon, having served as a visiting associate professor at Stanford University and a visiting research professor at Facebook Inc. To further his commitment to the development and democratization of artificial intelligence, Xing co-founded Petuum Inc., and he serves as its Founder, Executive Chairman, and Chief Scientist.

In addition to his research and entrepreneurial efforts, Xing has assumed leadership roles in the academic sphere, most notably as the founding President of the world's first artificial intelligence university, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). He took on the role of President at MBZUAI in January 2021.

Xing's contributions to statistical machine learning methodology have been widely recognized. He has been awarded the NSF Career Award from 2006 to 2011, the Sloan Fellowship from 2008 to 2010, the Carnegie Institution for Science Award in 2019, and the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship. His expertise has also led him to serve on the DARPA (ISAT) Advisory Group from 2011 to 2014 and as an International Machine Learning Society board member. In addition, Xing has been honored to serve as the program chair and general chair of the International Conference of Machine Learning (ICML).

Over the years, Xing has received several prestigious Fellow awards in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field. He became a Fellow of the AAAI in 2016, was named an IEEE Fellow in 2018, and earned the title of ASA Fellow and ACM Fellow in 2022. Most recently, in 2023, he was recognized as an IMS Fellow.
